Fall Football

One of my favorite things about fall is college football games.
This past weekend was finally the first cold game! It. was. freezing. By the end of the (disappointing) game, I was a popsicle. I had to go to the bathroom the entire game, but didn't go because I physically could not move. As a Texan, we aren't so used to the cold.
What to wear to college football game?
Your team colors for one thing.
In fall weather, I personally love a puffy vest and beanie.
I wore this J. Crew sweatshirt underneath my vest and paired it with my garnet (team color) pants. It was also a rainy day so my Hunter rain boots were perfect!
Dressing for football games can be fun and practical!

Shoe Soulmate

I saw these shoes and instantly I was obsessed with them.
Leopard booties with gold accents....I felt as if these were my shoe soulmate.
Yes, it is that serious.
Are they just shoes?
Perhaps literally, but figuratively so much more.
Shoes that MAKE an outfit. You do not put these on as a final thought or haphazardly. No, you put your outfit on as the final thought because you build an outfit around shoes like these.
Beautiful, fierce, Beyoncé- esque shoes that are the statement piece.
The Brad to my Angelina, the SpongeBob to my crabby patty, these shoes complete my feet.
Everyone needs a shoe soulmate.

I LOVE GOOOLLLDD

I love big, chunky, gold jewelry.
Sometimes you just want a simple outfit to let the jewelry be the focus.
I was feeling simple the other day and went with my oversized white tee, skinny jeans and flats. I wanted to add some glamour so I wore some of my favorite accessories.
My gold cuff, flower necklace and big sunnies.
Accessories can be the star of any outfit.
They say ( don't know who they is..) but regardless, they say fashion editors spend the most money on accessories. Shoes, handbags and jewelry are the best splurges.
Accessories can be great investments.
Go for the gold!

Bold Blazer

I have a confession to make, this blazer has been sitting in my closet for months. Never worn.
I bought it this summer and have been patiently waiting (kind of) for the weather to cool off so I can break this bad boy out. A long blazer in 90 degrees weather is a little much. But alas it is October and the weather has cooled off a bit so I finally pulled it out!
This blazer is bold, versatile and chic. I love classic pieces, like blazers, that have a modern or unique  twist to them. It is what develops personal style. The distinctions.
I paired this long, bright blazer over one of my go-to striped dresses for a casual dinner.
However, there are countless ways to wear it!
Over skinny jeans and a tee shirt or with leggings and a long button down are just two ideas... Be creative!
Blazers aren't just for the office anymore!

"Don't sweat the small stuff"

Is there anything more important than clothes?
No.
Absolutely not.
Just kidding.
Many things are more important... career, family, boyfriend, friends, traveling and more.

I guess I have been thinking about this because my family is so close to the Ebola patients in Dallas right now. Literally half a block away... scary close.
I know this is neither an outbreak, nor the zombie apocalypse, but it just makes you think. I think about all the people losing their lives in Africa to this awful disease, and my parents being so close to it.
There are a lot of scary issues in this world.
Sometimes you just need to put on a good outfit, and remember to not sweat the small stuff.

Over-the-knee Obsession

Boots are the quintessential fall shoe.
Ankle boots, chelsea boots, riding boots, platform boots and the list goes on. But my absolute favorite are over-the-knee boots. They are a major trend this season and personally I have always loved them. They are so dramatic.
I have black leather over-the-knee riding boots that I have literally worn to death. I love them, but I think they are done. I just bought these suede boots to replace them. Many boots can be very expensive, but I got these from Asos for a very reasonable price. I know I will be wearing them often this fall. What are your favorite types of boots?

Shades of Blush

 Happy hump day everyone!
I woke up today to wonderful 57 degree weather! Ha! 57 degrees today! Finally it feels like fall!
I think today is the day. I have been waiting (somewhat patiently) for this day to come.
The day I get my first pumpkin spice latte of the year!
I have held off drinking one until it feels like fall and today it does. Why are women so obsessed with the pumpkin spice latte? First, because it is delicious. And second, because we love cozying up in fall weather with a big chunky sweater and pumpkin spice in our hand. It just feels good.
So today I will do just that.
This latest outfit I wore will probably be the last summery outfit I post.
Good bye summer, I will not miss you.

Mint, Black and Gold

My life is so glamorous, let me tell you...
My glamour filled weekend consisted of taking my dog to get her shots, the car wash, grocery store, Target run and so much more. Jealous? I know right, so luxurious.
Sometimes you have to run errands and get shit done.
Even though I may not be buzzing around Milan on a Vespa ( I wish ) I still want to dress my way. Why? Because I want to, and that's a good enough reason I think.
Every day can be your runway.
Wear what you love and own it.

The Men's Shirt

I have always loved men's shirts.
I have had this shirt for years and I still love it. Funny this is, it cost less than 5 dollars at a thrift shop. Mens shirts are oversized, comfy and look great with skinny jeans or leggings. Add some feminine accessories and shoes and you have a chic, effortless outfit.  It may not be for everyone (and yes you can just buy a womans button down) but I love the look and size of men shirts. So when you see me occasionally shopping in the mens department, I am not shopping for my boyfriend ( he wishes) I am shopping for myself.

FALL

I don't think I am alone when I say I can not wait for fall. Technically it is the fall season, but it is still almost 90 degrees in the south. However, I have already begun to shift my wardrobe and am forcing it to feel like fall.  I could probably make a list of 100 must haves including the usual fall staples like sweaters, riding boots and leather moto jackets. However, I have simplified my list to 10. Some of which I have already, some of which are on my wish list.

1. Cape-  I love a cape! They are dramatic, chic and classic! Nasty Gal.com has some great capes for reasonable prices!

2. Choker- Blame it on the 90's.

3. Booties- Chelsea, heeled, buckled, so many options.

4. Over the Knee Boots- I am obsessed.  They remind me of Rachel Zoë and I love them.

5. Leopard - Leopard accessories like shoes or scarves are always chic. Treat them like a neutral an add to any outfit.

6. Loafers- Taken from the boys and worn better.

7. Vest - Not ready to commit to a full coat? A coat without sleeves? Yes.

8.  Leather skirt- Pencil skirt, midi skirt, pleated skirt. All in leather please.

9. Poncho- There is nothing more comfortable than a poncho. H&M and Nasty Gal have some great ones right now.

10. Knit Leggings- Fall always needs leggings. Take a hint from Marc Jacobs and get them in knit .

Slip Dress

I finally broke out my booties this past weekend!
I wore them Friday night with this simple slip dress for date night with the boo. It is such a simple and feminine silhouette I wanted to edge it up with some booties and a moto jacket.
Great thing about this dress, it was less than 20 dollars at Forever 21!
This particular dress has a loose and flow silhouette which I prefer when showing more skin.
Slip dresses can transcend every season because they look great with jackets, boots, heels, sandals and just about everything. Layer a cardigan over the dress or simply wear with strappy heels.
The slip dress is a classic staple.

 Mission: Backpack

I have been searching for my perfect backpack for months now.
Ever since I saw the Mansur Gavriel backpack I was in love. It was so sleek, clean and chic, but unfortunately I cannot justify spending that much money on a backpack.Even though I really, really want to...
Since then I have been searching for a reasonably priced backpack.
Personally, I wanted a black leather one. Not cloth, not quilted, just black.
I stumbled upon this one at DSW for only 50 dollars and had to get it.
I had finally found the one. My mission was complete. I now had finished my epic journey of searching every online store frequently for a simple black leather reasonably priced backpack. Ah.
I can now embrace fall completely with my new black backpack!
Hurray!

Anyone else have a backpack obsession?

From Work to Happy Hour

There is probably no combination I love more than a long blazer and leggings.
There are endless ways to style the combination. Personally I love a long boyfriend blazer combined with a skinny pant. The contrast of loose and oversized looks so great with a tight pant on bottom.
This look can easily translate from work to a more casual setting just by simply removing the blazer.
Want to go out at night? Simply add some heels and a clutch to the blazer and legging combination.

My "Throw Over"

Sometimes I just don't want to wear makeup or do my hair.
This is me sans makeup with messy hair. Truth.
On my lazier days I just want to be casual and throw something on. This "throw over" vest has been one of my favorites for years. You can throw it over just about anything, and it adds a little extra style to an otherwise simple outfit.
I got this grey vest from Shop Ruche for a great price!

The Half Crop

I think I saw a bird, and apparently it scared me..

I hope everyone had a good Labor day weekend!
For those of you who had to labor, I feel your pain. I had to work at the hospital this weekend. But luckily I had Monday off. I spent the day doing what everyone should be doing on their day off, binge watching True Detective. Matthew McConaughey, you never cease to amaze me. I have successfully watched over half of the first season in a day and a half. Oops.
Anyways... It is still hot as hell here so I decided to wear what I call my half crop top. It only requires half commitment to showing my stomach and I like that.
Personally I love this shirt because its different, asymmetric and minimalist. It pairs great with a simple necklace and jewelry.
Its perfect for hot days when your stomach needs a breeze and you still want to stuff yourself full of yummy labor day food.

Crisp Summer White

Every closet needs a crisp white shirt.
They are one of the most versatile pieces. The ways to style a white blouse are endless.
I personally love this one because of the sleeves and the oversized fit.
Why is it that an oversized shirt makes us feel skinnier?
Maybe its because in my head I'm pretending "Oh this giant shirt just dwarfs my tiny body everyone." When in all actuality I know its really "this shirt is just big." I still love an oversized fit anyways.
That's why I love clothes, they can alter the way we feel.

If you wear something more relaxed and loose on top, wear something tighter on the bottom.
Personally I love leopard with bright pink so I wore this necklace with the leopard shoes.

A crisp white shirt is perfect for a summer night out.

STRIPES + FLORALS

I don't think I will ever own enough striped shirts.
They are easily chic and classic. The quintessential Parisian look. I wish I could pass for Parisian, but ill have to stick with Texan.
This combination is one of my personal favorites: a striped tee shirt, floral skirt, flats and simple jewelry. To mix and match, you need to have at least one thing in common. This particular outfit has two things in common. Not only is the fabric both cotton, the navy stripes match the navy into the skirt.
You just need one similarity to tie the look together. If you match too much it can look matchy-matchy and you lose that effortless feel.
This combination always makes me feel creative and put together at the same time.

Hoodie Happiness

I'm cool.

You know when you're shopping and you see something that you are just drawn to? It isn't really your style and it may be a little "out there" but for some reason you love it. That's how I feel about this hoodie. I don't know why but I love it. Hoodies usually aren't my style. But a striped one with leather sleeves apparently is.
We like what we like.
Pieces like this are what develop a wardrobe with your own personal style.
A hoodie with leather sleeves is probably not uncommon in somewhere like New York, but where I live in the South it is different.
It may not be everyone's cup of tea, and that's okay.
We all have our own style and reasons we dress how we do.
That's why its called personal style.

What are some of your favorite pieces?

The Jolie

Sometimes a girl just wants to channel Angelina Jolie.
Okay I know I look nothing like her, but a girl can pretend! Nothing wrong with that!
In 2012 Angelina Jolie wore a black velvet Atelier Versace gown with a thigh high slit to the Oscars that caught major attention. Her right leg was all over the internet and the butt of many jokes.
Yes the leg pose may have been much, but it was a beautiful dress and hey we still remember it! Her publicist would be happy.
Every time I see a thigh high slit I think of  that famous dress.
So when I saw this maxi skirt I had to get it. High slits are so dramatic I love them.  (as long as they aren't too high) Maybe this skirt would make me feel powerful and fierce like her?
Heres hoping.

I wore the tee shirt to make the skirt and heels more casual.
Clothing alters our attitude and can influence our mood. Its the reason I love fashion.

I may not look like Angelina Jolie circa Oscars 2012, but I feel like her in this skirt.
Hey a girl can dream. :)

Printed Pants

I love these pants.
My boyfriend calls these my "crazy pants", but you know what? Sometimes life calls for crazy pants.
Life is messy and often too serious. Fashion should be light hearted and fun. Sometimes a crazy printed pant is just what you need.

These are one of my favorite pairs of pants. They are comfortable, silky and make a statement.
You can easily dress them up with a blouse and wedges, or wear casually with a tee shirt and sandals.
The pants are the stand out piece, so you can leave the rest simple.

Don't be afraid to wear what you love.
Go with the crazy pants. We all need a little crazy in our lives.

Vamp

I have always had fair skin.
I remember the glorious days of middle school dreaming of tan, golden legs. (no doubt in Spanish class when I should have been studying)
I have been through spray tanner, tan towels, tanning beds and more. All in pursuit of that Michael Kors model tan.
However...
Over the past several years I have come to love my fair skin.  I finally embrace it.
My skin is healthier and happier. I think I started to love light skin when I noticed celebrities throwing away the fake tanner. All of a sudden celebrities were rocking the light skin. Amanda Seyfried, Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone and so many others look so beautiful with fair skin.

This past Friday I wanted to enhance my light skin with an all black outfit and red lips.
I felt like a vampire and I loved it.
The cool kind of Vampire from True Blood though, not the sparkly Twilight kind. ;)

I wore this black blouse tucked into my black quilted skirt with my snakeskin loafers.
Black on black has always been a personal fave.
(Also, I am obsessed with these androgynous pointy toe loafers)

Sometimes our flaws become our favorite features. They are what make us unique.
Embrace them.

Kimono Kraze

Kimonos and aviators go together like red wine and chocolate: perfectly...
An effortlessly cool combination on anyone.
Add some Birkenstocks and you're ready for Bonnaroo...
I'm not exactly the "cool music festival type", blame it on my uptight control freak personality or utter lack of chillness, but I can't get away with that vibe. Maybe ill try a festival one day, but that is beside the point.

Something is happening with kimonos right now... and I welcome it.
Throw a kimono over a dress , crop top, or a tee shirt and jean shorts and voila... outfit!
Kimonos easily add style to any look.
Short, long, extra long, floral, fringe.... so many options!
I have seen a good bit of kimonos at Forever 21 for good prices if you want to give one a try and not spend too much.
I have had this floral one for a couple years now and still love it.
I have definitely gotten my moneys worth...
Maybe I will try a fringe one next....
Oh the possibilities.

BLACK TIED + STRIPES and SPOTS

Its not secret I love some good jewelry, what woman doesn't?
Jewelry can elevate any outfit.
Accessories can make a simple outfit elegant, and a glamorous outfit classic. Accessorizing with jewelry is a great way to add some personal style to any outfit. That is why I am so excited when I stumble up quality brands for good prices!

I am SO excited to share about my new collaboration with Black Tied!
Black Tied is a great U.K. based jewelry company with enormous style and affordable prices.
I recently bought these 2 bracelets from Black Tied and I honestly am so impressed.
I love the quote on the one bracelet " DREAM BELIEVE ACHIEVE" and the edgy skulls on the other bracelet. Each piece can stand alone , but they also look great together.
The quality of both bracelets were impeccable. Both pieces will easily translate with any outfit.
They are classic pieces with style.

Black Tied has generously offered a 15% off discount on their jewelry for my readers!
The discount code is: STRIPES15
The discount is valid until September 2nd so hurry and buy some great jewelry!
(P.S. you enter the discount code at the last step of checkout after you are redirected back to the website from PayPal, and it will convert to US dollars or whatever currency you are using)

Basics and Birks

Sometimes you want to just throw on a tee shirt, some comfy shorts and go. So what does every wardrobe need? A good basic tee shirt and some fun printed shorts. I love this basic tee from Loft and these printed pom pom shorts from Urban Outfitters. Add some sandals and jewelry and boom! Good to go! (I got this necklace from a vintage thrift shop, one of my favorite ways to find interesting jewelry)
This combo makes for an easy summery look for everyone.

Baby Doll Dress

I love sushi, which is weird because I used to hate fish.
But now in my grown up adulthood, I can eat the crap out of some sushi.
Saturday night that was precisely what I was craving.
5 Philadelphia rolls please...!
I am not ashamed to say I ate more sushi than my boyfriend... it happens.
(If you live in Columbia, SC try Camon Sushi. Its a little hole in the wall Japanese place that is delicious!)

I have been dying to wear my new candy pink clutch from Nasty Gal. It is such a fun statement that is girly with a hint of edge. I wore the clutch with my mint, lace baby doll dress and metallic sandals for a comfy, feminine and vintage-esque  look.

 Hope you like!

Stripes + Leather

Doin' the robot.

Its amazing how much more I appreciate drinking as a working adult. After work nothing sounds as good as a glass of wine. I should be out running, but lets be real most of the time I end up on the couch with a glass full of wine and mouth full of chocolate. Adulthood.
When work is over Friday, it definitely calls for a celebration drink.
This past Friday my boyfriend and I went out to a nearby bar for a few beers.
(I am not going to lie, I was still asleep by 10:30 pm.)
We may not have been out all night, but I still love the excuse to put on a good outfit.
I wore this striped shirt, leather shorts and wedges. I topped it off with this awesome statement necklace from Zara.
Overall, a relaxing and just inebriated enough Friday night.
Until next Friday...

Dressing for an Interview

I had an interview this past Friday (fingers crossed) and that got me thinking about a post: what to wear to an interview?
First, it depends on the job you are applying for. They say "dress for the job you want, not the job you have." Brilliant advice. This it true for interviewing for the job you want.
If you are interviewing for a job in the fashion industry (lucky!) you can be more liberal with what you wear. You would want to show YOUR personal style and be creative. However, with the rest of the professional world conservative is better.
I wanted to look chic, professional and classic (with a hint of Olivia style).
Its always good to stick with neutrals, but pops of color can also look great!
My philosophy with interviews is be classic, and add little hints of your style.
I wore one of my favorite gold buckle bracelets, gold ring and Kate Spade purse to add some subtle style.

My interview philosophies:

 Never show your shoulders.
Don't show cleavage. Just don't.
If you are wearing something sheer, wear a cami or slip underneath.
No mini skirts or short dresses.
Don't over accessorize.
A great blazer is always a good idea.
Nice shoes! Its all about the shoes!

Go forth and be Professional!

 Check Yourself

If anyone has watched "Millionaire Matchmaker" they understand when I say I can have a  "masculine energy." Patti would probably yell at me for being to controlling and trying to assume the dominant role... but that's beside the point. My point is about clothes, and how a masculine energy can be so chic when integrated into an outfit. Androgynous clothes are always all over the runway. I am all about mixing (maybe my style is a little schizo), but mixing feminine and masculine is the way to go. Pairing a dress with sneakers was exactly how I was feeling the other day. Casual and laid back (with a dash of the 90's trend in the tie dress.) I added a menswear inspired watch for another touch, while the dress and clutch keep it in balance.

Bustier Business

I surprised myself when I realized I loved this crop top bustier I saw at Forever 21. Something about it, maybe the colors or texture, I was drawn to.
I find that bustier tops like this one can easily turn "too sexy" if you know what I mean.
This is especially true for women like me who are blessed with a curvier body.
The key is pairing the top with looser, more conservative pieces.
I went with the gladiator sandals and midi skirt to balance out the look.
If you are showing a lot of skin on the top, you want to cover a lot of skin on the bottom.
It is all about balance.

What do you think of the bustier look?

Summer Lovin'

I am a sucker for a good sale.
In fact, most everything in my closet was bought on sale. I pride myself on finding great steals.
I wish I could buy my dream Céline bag, but that would be financially irresponsible. Even though I really really want to... like really bad.
However, most people can't afford to spend thousands of dollars on their wardrobe. I am one of these people. The good news is, you don't have to spend a fortune to have a great closet.
I was shopping the other day at Urban Outfitters and stumbled upon this great button down. Even though it is long sleeved it is a thin, breathable material making it wearable for summer. I love the print and colors of this shirt. I decided I wanted this shirt, so I look at the price tag and lo and behold.... its on sale!! 50% off! I'll take it!
Shopping without the guilt is the best.

Jean shorts are crucial for summer.
I swear I spent years trying to find the perfect pair of jean shorts. I finally found this pair a couple months ago at the J. Crew outlet. They were exactly what I wanted! Classic, not too short, simple. Finally my search for the perfect pair of jean shorts was over.
Bonus! They were on sale!

Great clothes come at all prices.
I love Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Céline,  Marchesa, Chanel and so many couture designers.
Their collections are art. I respect their clothes enormously and am fascinated by the couture collections every season.
I hope to be able to wear gorgeous couture clothes one day; but you can still have great style on a smaller budget!
Personal style is about expressing yourself and being confident, not about the price tag.

 Into the Tropics

I am a big believer in investing in timeless pieces, but I love a good steal on a trend.
Splurge on the staples, and have fun with the trends you like.

Tropical and palm tree prints have been a mini trend this season. Personally, I think these prints are always great for summer and won't go out of style. Tropical prints can go a little "Tommy Bahama" and "lual" ish though, which is not so good. To avoid a slide into the Hawaiian lual theme , accessories with  "un-beachy" modern pieces like stilettos, sneakers, structured satchels etc..
. I love this funky print on this simple shift silhouette.

The other trend is on my feet.
Sneakers!
When Chanel débuted their glamorous sneakers that was it, sneakers were everywhere.
Tennis shoes and Vans- esque slides are all over the fashion world.
This may be one of the most comfortable trends, and I am okay with that.
My favorite way to wear fashion sneakers is mixed with feminine pieces.
Sporty and feminine can be a great pairing.
Casual sneakers can make a feminine dress less stuffy and more effortless.
Not to mention more comfy.

What do you think of fashion sneakers?

The Birkenstock Bandwagon

I've had my eye on some Birkenstocks since early spring.
Birkenstocks are the "it" shoe this season, and probably the next.
I love this trend. The whole "sporty shoe" thing that's happening right now is amazing.
It may not be for everyone, but it is definitely for me.
I have already written in my post "Ugly Shoes" about this awesome trend, but I can't get enough of it.
This past year has been all about the 90's. Overalls, plaid, flannel, Birkenstocks, grunge and more.
The only reason I had not bought some Birkenstocks yet is because I couldn't decide.
Stick to the classics like black or brown? Go summery with white? Be funky and get a print like leopard?
Calf hair? Leather? Matte?
Should I buy the original Birkenstocks or get the similar style with Zara, or Topshop?
So many decisions!
I may have over thought this...
Until yesterday when I happened upon the perfect pair for me.
Metallic.
Yes!
I love any color, material or brand of these shoes and highly suggest them for any closet.
Pick what style suits you and your personality and rock them for summer and into fall..

I wore these metallic Birkenstock style shoes with my Zara dress for a simple summer look.
The shoes made the dress more casual and effortless for daytime.
This is a simple look I love.

 Rainy Day Laziness

Sometimes I absolutely love rainy days.
Rainy days give me an excuse to relax and be lazy.... which we probably all need more of.
A day filled with wine, magazines and a book sounds like heaven.
I tend to get wrapped up in work and so busy sometimes I forget to slow down and relax.
Probably a very common issue.

One thing rainy days can mess up: your outfit.
We've all been there where you have the perfect outfit planned out, but the weather screws it all up. Whether its rain, snow, cold or just freaking hot and humid all the time like it is here, weather can mess up your plans. And I'm a planner, so I do not like this. wah.
However...if you have the right pieces in your closet you can have a chic, easy, rain appropriate outfit in minutes.
I've posted about Hunter boots before, but again I will say they are a wonderful staple for any closet.
Second rainy staple: the Anorak jacket.
Anoraks are chic, rain or shine.
(or a trench coat...I LOVE trench coats)
Add a t shirt and jeans and you're ready for a chic and appropriate day in the rain.

Notice my cute doggy :)

Dress for yourself, and the occasion.

PINEAPPLES + JACQUARD

What mixes well with gold pineapples? A highlighter yellow jacquard skirt apparently!
As I have previously stated, I love mixing prints and textures.
This outfit has a lot of mixing, but stays in a similar color scheme keeping it tied together.
Sometimes unexpected patterns and colors go great together, you just have to experiment.
Personally, I love metallics so I loved pairing the gold pineapples with my metallic shoes.
When it mixes and matches, it looks effortless and fun.
Experimenting with clothes is a great way to develop personal style and have fun... what do ya think?

Boyfriend Jeans: From DAY to NIGHT

Boyfriend jeans are one of my favorite closet staples. They are comfortable and versatile.
Today I felt like showing how easy they are to transition from day into night.
I live in the south where it is currently HOT every day. Every day feels like you're living in a sauna.
Having said that, in the summers you just want to wear as little as possible.
I paired this teal tank top, coral necklace and gold cuff with my boyfriend jeans and sandals. Comfortable, colorful and cool for this hot weather. Easy peasy.
Sunglasses needed due to scorching sun.

I wanted to show how easy this look could transition into a casual evening outfit.
In comes another favorite wardrobe staple: the blazer. Ah... the blazer, the piece that can elevate any outfit. The heavenly blazer can add a level of chicness to just about any look.
White, teal and coral look nice together for summer so I added my white blazer.
For shoes, I wore my black and white T strapped heels. They are opened toed which keeps them also casual and summery.
A blazer and heels with boyfriend jeans? Yes please!

The pieces in this outfit are basic staples that are in most peoples closets. When these pieces are put together they can make a great summer look.
There are so many options with blazers and boyfriend jeans, but one things for sure: they make a great pair.

A Versatile Midi

Dress from Forever 21. Shoes from Shoemint. Clutch from H&M. Earrings from Forever 21. Photo Credit to Kelvin from Notoriously Dapper.

Compared to the rest of my closet, I don't have too many dresses.

When I saw this dress I had to get it. Why?... Because it is so versatile. First of all, I love the length. The midi skirt/dress length is one of my favorite trends right now. Second, Its a simple silhouette but has a fun print. Lastly, this dress can easily go from day to night.

For the day, I paired this dress with a very summery straw clutch with an orange border. I liked this clutch because it added a nice pop of color. The mint statement earrings went nicely with the color combination in the dress, and I then kept the rest of the jewelry minimal. I couldn't help myself and had to add my leopard/zebra print strappy heels. (Leopard mixes well with most prints, especially as shoes)

This dress is so versatile and easily styled.

For the office I would add a blazer and nude heels.

For a more casual day outfit you could wear this with a headband, sandals and a nice cuff.

At night, pair this dress with stilettos, big hair, and a more night friendly clutch.

I hope you like this outfit!

Summer Crop Top

Shirt from Urban Outfitters. Pants from Loft. Bucket Bag from Zara

My fashion mood seems to change all the time. Some days, like yesterday, I just want to be easy breezy and comfortable.
Most of the time my fashion sense is classic with a little edge. However, sometimes its preppy, and sometimes its a little over the top.
I love Rachel Zoe's style of "more is more" with a lot of jewelry and platform heels. I love her glamorous look,  she is a style icon.  Like in my previous post, I also love mixing prints and putting unexpected pieces together.
But yesterday I was in a casual boho-esque mood.
I went to lunch with a good friend of mine to one of our favorite spots to eat. This cafe happens to have the best mimosa's... of which we have indulged quite a few times.
(Probably not the best idea to gorge yourself on food while wearing a crop top, but too late)
Then we proceeded to go shopping, and to my astonishment did not buy anything. Somehow I had a bit of willpower and resisted temptation. Crazy.
I try to make it a rule that I only buy things I LOVE.
If I am unsure even a little bit, I usually don't buy it. I try to stick to that.
I don't believe you have to put yourself in one category: preppy, boho, classic, edgy. I believe peoples attitude, mood and circumstances change, and the clothes should change with it.

Wear what you feel.

Mixed Media

I chose the name of my blog to be "Stripes and Spots" for a couple reasons.

One, I love striped T-shirts and polka dot prints.

(I'm pretty sure half of my closet is striped shirts... thank you France)

The second reason is one of my favorite looks is one with mixed prints or textures.

And the last reasons is, I love unexpected outfits. Mixing media is such an unexpectedly chic way to dress.

Unpredictable clothing is my favorite... I remember one of my favorite outfits in college was a striped t shirt with a high waisted floral skirt and ballet flats. It was a simple silhouette but the prints mixed together made it look stylish and different.

The key to mixing is to have one thing in common. Whether is be fabric, color or style, one media should be uniform.

In this look I chose to stick with cool colors and a little bit of a boho style. I paired the lace skirt with  a t shirt and sandals to make it more casual for daytime.  I added the print headband (which has a little purple in it to tie to the skirt) for a little extra style.

I am SO excited to be featured on notoriouslydapper.com for Women Fashion Wednesday! I love his blog and am beyond happy to be on it!!! I would love to hear your feedback!!!

Gingham Style

Me and my sword Needle for you Game of Thrones fans.

French hen sweater. J Crew.

Gingham has come on the fashion world's radar recently. Yes, this is the print from Dorothy's dress in the Wizard of Oz. Currently I have 2 J. Crew gingham button downs ( pictured above) , but I  have  my eye out for a midi gingham skirt.
If you don't want to go full out Dorothy, opt for a button down you can layer.
These shirts can easily stand on their own or go great under a sweater (pictured above.)
Since its a million degrees in summer here, I tied this shirt at my waist and wore it with a chiffon skirt recently for a more summery look.

I love gingham dresses for summer.
There is something very American about them.
Topshop has some great dresses and skirts I am currently looking at.
Since this print feels vintage, opt for a more modern silhouette.
(Kerry Washington and Lauren Conrad have both been seen wearing this retro print)
Hopefully there will be more gingham outfits to come... stay tuned....

In my White Tee

When talking about staples in a wardrobe the basic white tee is always on the list.
Sometimes a stylish outfit is a simple and basic one.
Less is more.
Lets face it, when running errands you want to be comfortable.
I wore this white tee from Loft with my mint cropped pants. I love this tee because it is a soft fabric and not too thin.
Because the T shirt is so basic it leaves the attention to be drawn elsewhere like the pants, shoes or accessories.
(A simple white tee and a great statement jacket is one of my favorite looks)
With this outfit I paired the pink purse and mint pants with a nude shoe to not overwhelm with pastels.
Add some simple jewelry like a locket or studs and you're good to go.
Simple.

This is another outfit where the pants are the attention.
These royal blue pajama pants can be a bit loud, but paired with such simplicity it quiets them.
These pants kind of make me feel like a Sultan/ 80's dancer.... can't decide.. but I love them.
They are a little funky and a lot of comfy.
I can't wait to dress these pants up a bit more creatively.
But this post is about minimalism. So....
I paired them with a white tank, bucket bag and sandals for the day.
An easy daytime look in the 90 degree summer heat.

Sometimes you just want to give the basic tee some credit.

 Hunter Boots

Ever since Kate Moss rocked Hunter wellies at Glastonbury in 2005, they have been part of the fashion world. The style icon put rain boots on the map.
Celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker and Rachel Bilson ( my 2 personal favorites ) have been seen wearing these boots.
The great thing about the Hunter brand is that they look great with anything.
One idea is to pair them with a sun dress to make the outfit look more casual and effortless.
For a classic look you can take a cue from Kate Moss and wear them with cut off shorts and a t shirt.
Outfit ideas with Hunter boots:
Skinny jeans and a chunky sweater. Button down and a high waisted skirt.
A striped shirt, anorak and jean shorts.
The possibilities are endless.

These great boots are sturdy and well made. (They also come in a variety of colors and glosses)  They are a little more expensive than most rain boots, but they will last a long time and never go out of style.
In my opinion they are a great staple in any wardrobe.
They may be rubber boots, but they sure do look chic.

THE JUMPSUIT

Is there anything easier or more chic than a jumpsuit?
Nope.

I already mentioned this jumpsuit when I wore it to D.C., but I don't think I gave jumpsuits justice.
I don't know why some people forget about these amazingly easy outfits.
An outfit in 1 piece... boom. DONE.
The hotter cousin of the romper.
I do like rompers, but there is something more sophisticated about a pant than shorts.
Romper for the day, jumpsuit for the night.

I think some people may hesitant to wear them because they can make you stand out.
They are pieces you have to wear with confidence. Wear the jumpsuit don't let it wear you.
Own it.
I hear "I can't pull that off" all the time by people. Guess what, you can. Its all in your head. The key is picking one that fits you well so you feel good in it. I have a tall friend who has an issue with the legs being too short. In this case pick a slightly cropped pair like the one in this picture. It will fit you and it will also show off your shoes.

I think jumpsuits are best when they are classic silhouettes.
Go for simple and play up with shoes and accessories.
Because they are one piece, prints and complicated silhouettes tend to be too overwhelming.
(Especially on a short girl like me)
Black is always my favorite.
(I really want a red one though)
I have to say, I got a lot of compliments on this outfit and it is one of my favorites.
I wore this black jumpsuit with a gold link bracelet and gold flower statement necklace.
The shoes are my black suede wedges.

P.S. The only draw back of jumpsuits.... they are not bathroom friendly

WHITE NOW

My favorite color (or lack of color) for spring is white. Clean, polished, chic white. All white is having a moment in spring. I mean white never goes out of style... Its not some crazy color like 70's pea green . Its white.
People who still enforce the whole "no white after labor day" are wrong. Just wrong. And missing out.
I think  its an old southern belief.
But a white coat in winter is gorgeous.
And all white in spring is chic....
I am always a huge fan of all black outfits . All black everything is my favorite.
But since I live in the South, and its HOT, all white for spring/summer is more practical.
Although I still love black. Always.
I wore this outfit last weekend. Its a quilted off white top from forever 21 and a white and gray marble print neoprene pencil skirt from Zara.
I added a black and gold necklace to tie in the black in the pencil skirt.
I wore a loose fitting top to offset the tightness of the pencil skirt..
Personally, I loved this outfit.
...
I believe you should dress for yourself, and yourself only. Wear what you love regardless of what others may say.
If you love it, wear it.
That's how you develop personal style.
Not by wearing what's trendy and what others love.
But what YOU love.
I always try to buy only pieces that's I adore . If I  am questioning it even a little I don't buy it.
Don't dress for men.
Don't dress for women.
Dress for yourself, and the occasion.

Current Obsessions

If you're a normal girl and not a stick skinny model the idea of crop tops probably made you feel sick.
Really, who can pull off a short and tight crop top and tight pencil skirt?
Models I tell you that's who.
I love that look, but I am no model.
However, crop tops CAN be for anyone!
The key is to picking what you are comfortable with and what you like.
Don't want to show your midriff?
Opt for a crop top that isn't too short and pair it with something high waisted.
I paired this loose fitting crop top with a high waisted Midi skirt.

You could also pair it with a high waisted maxi skirt, pants or a pencil skirt.
There are also a lot of different textures and styles of crop tops out there.
If you don't want a tight one, there are plenty of very loose flow ones that would look great with something tighter on the bottom like a pencil skirt.
There are also sweater crop tops, ones covered with embellishemtns, knit tops and so much more.
(Put a button down underneath a knit crop top for a very stylish look)
So many ways to wear these tops.
This trend isn't just for models..

The midi skirt... what is there to say about it?
Very 50's? Modest? Only for tall people?........uhhhh  and so CHIC!
The midi skirt has been everywhere!
This mid length skirt has been all over Zara, H&M, TopShop and so much more.
Pleated ones, colorful ones, graphic ones... lots of options.
I think they are great for spring and summer!
Wear them with a t shirt or blouse tucked in or a cropped sweater is one of my favorite looks.
If you can pull of a tight crop top, go for it I think that look is amazing.
Its got a kind of retro vibe and to me its just cool.
Its not sexy... but its chic.

My last favorite trend right now is wearable art.

Very graphic designs.
High end designers are even literally putting famous paintings on clothes and bags.
I like it.
I think for the commoner like myself though, graphic designs are a little more wearable than the actually Mona Lisa.
Go for strong lines, primary colors whatever tickles your fancy.

"Ugly" Shoes

The Birkenstock is back.... and I am loving it! Ever since Céline débuted their new it shoe ( a Birkenstock-esque sandal) in their spring collection, they have been everywhere. The laid back, some may even call "ugly cool" sandal is all over. Even J. Crew has a Birkenstock for J. Crew line out right now. I blame it on the 90's trend.

Some people may hate this shoe style, I get it, but there is something so effortlessly cool about it. Its not a pretty shoe or a sexy shoe... but it is cool. They kind make me feel like I'm living in modern Biblical times...But I love them.. There have also been a lot of pool sliders out now, a very similar style.  Also a fan.

I have been eyeing these black Zara sandals for a month and my boyfriend finally bought them for me for my birthday. They go with just about everything and are so comfy. I can't wait to pair them with a dressier outfit for an effortless look. Hopefully there will be more pictures to follow! I would love to know what others are thinking about this trend.

CLASSICS

I recently got this simple white chiffon shirt with embellishments from Zara and I love it.  This is such a pretty shirt it can easily stand alone with these black pants and nude heels. However, it is amazing how many ways you can wear a white blouse.

I am a big fan of classic pieces with your own personal twist. One of my favorite wardrobe staples is a blazer.  I LOVE a good blazer. I paired this H&M blazer over my white blouse and black skinny jeans.  White over white always looks clean and polished to me. My goal is to one day have every color blazer possible, because they are that awesome.

One of the best classic wardrobe pieces everyone should have is a trench coat. Anyone can wear a trench coat whether they are 9 or 90. It will never go out of style.  Instead of going with the traditional khaki, I got a blush color I thought was pretty. Switch it up a bit...

Blazers, trench coats, white bouses, black pants, all classic pieces that will never be out of style. Take these classic pieces and put your own spin on them.. It will be effortlessly chic.

CAMEL + BLACK

Camel and black... one of my favorite color combinations. Whoever said you can't mix brown and black was wrong. Just wrong.. Neutrals always look great together, black, white, camel, mocha, navy, taupe, the list goes on an on.. Mixing neutrals is an easy way to look effortless and chic. Stick to just a couple color schemes though, you don't want to go overboard. Less is more. For example this outfit has the camel sweater with black pants and finished with leopard print shoes that also have a touch of zebra . I stuck with mostly a black and brown color scheme with just that hint of white on the shoes and bag. All in all a very easy and comfortable outfit!

MY SWEATER and ME

You really can't go wrong with a great sweater and boyfriend jeans... Such a simple combination, but a classic one.
This spring pastels are a huge trend for sweaters. I love the robins egg blue , baby pink and pastel green colors I keep seeing. I decided to go with this nude pink sweater from Loft because I love that the color is very light that gives it an almost spring feel. I paired this sweater with a simple locket necklace that I have. ( My grandmother actually gave me this locket, it is a family heirloom and I love it)
Boyfriend jeans are definitely a closet staple. There are so many ways to wear them including with a t shirt, blazer and heels. I always love that look. These jeans are more fitted because it fits my body type better, but the looser more relaxed boyfriend jeans I am a big fan of. Really, the possibilities are endless.
